With this kit, students will explore the Environmental Literacy and Sustainability components of the STEELS Standards. Specifically the concept of sustainability through a read-aloud of Just a Dream by Chris Van Allsburg and various hands-on activities. They will learn the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling by collecting and sorting trash, gaining an understanding of the impact they have on their classroom community. Additionally, students will reuse materials from previous lessons to create compostable planters, emphasizing practical environmental stewardship. They will also discover why water is a precious resource and practice basic water conservation techniques that can be applied at home and in their communities. Finally, students will engage in sustainable gardening and agricultural practices by creating an eco-friendly space, encouraging them to adopt sustainable habits in everyday life.
