With this kit, students will explore the Environmental Literacy and Sustainability components of the STEELS Standards. With this ecosystem education kit, students will explore sustainability through a read-aloud of Common Ground: The Water, Earth, and Air We Share by Molly Bang, followed by activities that deepen their understanding of sustainability. They will be introduced to ecosystems by identifying the living and non-living components in their local area and learning how these elements depend on one another for survival. Students will also discover the importance of preventing invasive species from entering ecosystems and how such disruptions can affect the food web. Through reflection, they will assess the impact of their own actions on the environment. Additionally, students will investigate how pollution moves through water systems and consider its broader effects. Finally, they will construct arguments or presentations to advocate for action on a selected environmental issue and propose potential solutions.
